Sang Kancil and the Crocodile
(A Malaysian Children Folktale told by Aaron Shepard)
One day, Sang Kancil went down to the river to take a drink. But he knew that the crocodile might be waiting underwater to eat him, so he said out loud. “I wonder if the water’s warm. I’ll put in my leg and find out.”
Of course, Sang Kancil didn’t put in his leg. He picked up a stick instead and put one end into the water. Chomp…! The crocodile grabbed the stick and pulled it underwater.
Sang Kancil laughed. “Ha… ha…ha… Stupid Crocodile! Can't you tell the difference between a stick and a leg?” Then Sang Kancil ran off to drink somewhere else.
On the next day, Sang Kancil wanted to cross the river. He wanted to eat the fruits on the other side of the river. He saw a floating log in the river. He knew that the crocodile looked like a log when he floats.
Sang Kancil had an idea. He said out loud, "If that log is really Crocodile, it won't talk. But if it's really just a log, it will tell me."
He listened. A rough voice said, "I'm really just a log."
Sang Kancil laughed. "Stupid Crocodile! Do you think a log can talk?" And off he went.
However, Sang Kancil still wanted to cross the river. He really wanted to taste the ripe fruits and shoots on the other side. But he didn't want the crocodiles to eat him first!
Sang Kancil got another brilliant idea. He called out loud, “Hey, crocodile!”
The crocodile rose from the water, “Hello, Sang Kancil. Have you come to be my lunch?”
Sang Kancil smiled. “Sorry, not today, crocodile. I have orders from the King. He wants to invite all the crocodiles in this river to a party. He wants me to count all the crocodiles so he could prepare enough meal for you.”
“Really…? Tell us what to do,” said the crocodile.
“You must line up from this side of the river to the other side,” said Sang Kancil.
The crocodile then got all his friends and family. They lined up across the river.
Sang Kancil then jumped onto the crocodile’s back. “One,” he counted. He jumped onto the next crocodile, “Two.” And the next crocodile, “Three.”
Sang Kancil kept jumping until he arrived on the other side of the river.
“How many are there?” asked the crocodile.
“Just enough,” said Sang Kancil. "And they are all stupid!" He laughed as he ran to the forest.
Task: Record a short video (1 to 2 minutes) of yourself giving your own opinion on what children can learn from the story. Post the video in your WhatsApp status for your lecturer to view. Then, upload it into your personal e-Portfolio folder (Week 1 Video).
